PTSD/DISABILITY

POSTTRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD)

PTSD is believed to cause damage in the limbic system, the part of the brain that makes us fearful under stress. The primitive (emotional) portion of the brain remains engaged while the higher order thinking in the neo-cortex (analytic) shuts down. Emotions are easily triggered and the person lives in a continual state of emotional arousal. To avoid being “triggered” into hyper-arousal, trauma victims continually detach themselves (disassociate) from their immediate environment. This leaves them distant and cold to loved ones and unable to focus and concentrate on daily activities. They may experience affective dysregulation, a hot and cold emotional presentation, and a black and white world view. Lack of trust is often pervasive even in their closest relationships.
